Vietnam's golf industry is experiencing remarkable growth, striving not only to catch up with regional powerhouses but also confidently asserting its own identity through a range of unique destinations and high-quality courses. Laguna Lăng Cô – one of the most picturesque and character-rich golf courses in Vietnam, designed by the legendary Nick Faldo – stands as a prime example of this dynamic ascent. It is also where we had the opportunity to meet Mr. Stephen Banks, Director of Golf at Laguna Lăng Cô, and listen to his insights on the vision, the current landscape of Central Vietnam's golf market, and the core values that define the appeal of this destination.

Under Mr. Stephen Banks’ leadership, Laguna Golf Lăng Cô has continually expanded its network of strategic partnerships, most notably becoming a member of the prestigious Taiheiyo Club in Japan – a milestone that affirms the resort’s stature within the landscape of luxury golf tourism in Asia. At the same time, he is also a key figure shaping the future of the Vietnam Golf Coast, an alliance connecting the top golf courses along Central Vietnam’s coastline.

Laguna Lăng Cô recently became a member of the Taiheiyo Club – one of Japan’s most prestigious golf networks. Could you share more about this collaboration and its strategic significance?

The 2024 partnership with the Taiheiyo Club is a milestone that deepens our connection with Japan’s elite golfing community. It grants their members exclusive access to our championship course and three-tier luxury resort offerings. With new direct flights from Japan to Đà Nẵng scheduled for December 2025, this relationship is rapidly gaining traction and aligns perfectly with our vision of welcoming more discerning golfers from Northeast Asia.

Golf has long been considered a sport that fosters strong connections  in both athletic and corporate contexts. In your opinion, which aspect of the Laguna Golf Lăng Cô experience best reflects this spirit of “connection”?

At Laguna Golf Lăng Cô, “connection” is lived every day between guests and nature, heritage and hospitality. Sir Nick Faldo’s top-100 design takes players on a journey through black rock outcrops, oceanfront holes, 8.5 acres of active rice paddies, and even past our gentle, hard-working water buffaloes.

It’s a round of golf that becomes a story deeply rooted in the land and culture of Central Vietnam.

Could you share more about the goals and vision of Vietnam Golf Coast in the near future? Which markets are being prioritized?

Vietnam Golf Coast is poised to become the most experiential and sustainable golf destination in Asia. While Korea remains a vital market, especially from December to April for winter golf camps and GSA, our future focus lies in expanding Western market share. We’re targeting Australia, New Zealand, and Europe, particularly during their ideal travel windows: March to May and late August through October, when Central Vietnam offers perfect playing conditions, seamless access, and exquisite value.

What advantages position the Đà Nẵng – Huế – Hội An region as a premier golf destination?

Few regions offer such a rich fusion of cultural depth and coastal beauty. Within an hour’s drive, players can explore the ancient town of Hội An, the imperial city of Huế, and Đà Nẵng’s vibrant beach life. At the heart of it all sits Laguna Lăng Cô, a flagship Banyan Group property offering world-class accommodation, authentic Vietnamese and international cuisine, and a Sir Nick Faldo-designed course that tells a story with every hole.

It’s more than a golf trip – it’s a destination experience.

How do you assess the role of golf in connecting Central Vietnam with the international community?

Golf is the great connector. Whether through marquee tournaments like the Faldo Series Asia Grand Final or intimate guest experiences on-course, we see golf acting as a gateway for cultural exchange and meaningful travel. At Laguna Lăng Cô, international guests don’t just play—they engage with local communities, farm-side traditions, and a style of service that’s both personal and profound.

How have newly established direct international flights to Đà Nẵng impacted the luxury tourism and golf industries in Central Vietnam?

They’ve changed the game. Direct routes from key hubs like Sydney, Auckland, Seoul, and soon Tokyo mean premium golf travelers can arrive swiftly and comfortably. This accessibility has driven demand for bespoke golf vacations, often combining multiple courses along the Vietnam Golf Coast. Laguna Lăng Cô’s range of accommodations – from private Banyan Tree pool villas to stylish Angsana suites and family-friendly golf residences – caters beautifully to this evolving market.

In your opinion, how should golf and luxury travel be better integrated to enhance the overall guest experience?

It starts with personalisation and place. Golfers want to feel not only welcomed, but also immersed. At Laguna Lăng Cô, we curate every element from handcrafted culinary experiences to wellness journeys to cultural excursions. Whether it’s playing amongst buffalo and rice fields or dining on locally caught seafood with a view of the mountains, guests experience Vietnam with every sense engaged.

What do you see as the biggest challenges currently facing Vietnam’s golf industry?

Talent development and sustainability. As the country enters the global stage, we must cultivate a skilled, passionate workforce that understands both luxury and local values. On the course, we must lead with ecological integrity, our buffaloes naturally maintain the fairways, and our rice paddies support local farmers. Golf in Vietnam must grow hand-in-hand with its communities and environment.

If you could share one message with the international community, what would you want the world to know about golf in Vietnam?

Vietnam isn’t just playing catch-up – it’s setting the pace. With courses like Laguna Lăng Cô, crafted by legends like Sir Nick Faldo, we blend championship golf with cultural depth, environmental care, and heartfelt hospitality.

Come for the fairways, stay for the connection.
