‘Hoa Mắt’ Exhibition Statement
The exhibition “Hoa Mắt” by Thien Minh is inspired by the multi-dimensionality in art, especially in photography, and how we see and “record” beauty through our eyes. Minh addresses the question “is beauty all but an illusion?”
>> This post is also available in Vietnamese.
Through a play on words, Minh explores the figurative and literal meaning of the term ‘hoa mắt”.
The figurative translation of “hoa mắt” means experiencing an illusion- a thing that is or is likely to be wrongly perceived or interpreted by the senses. Thien Minh dives into the subject of one’s sometimes distorted perception of oneself, especially in this digital age where most people have a digital identity or an online avatar. Literally, the phrase translates as “flowers-eyes” which leads the way to the exploration of the aesthetic concept in the art.
Adding yet another layer, the figurative and literal meaning also juxtapose on the singular meaning of Hoa and Mắt. “Hoa” being the symbol of beauty, and “mắt” being the mirror that reflects beauty.
Ultimately, “Hoa Mắt” is an expression of Thien Minh’s love of nature and the connection, sometimes just fleeting, to the people that have crossed his path in his 10-year career as a portrait photographer.
